What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an ancient healing modality whereby extremely fine, sterile needles are inserted at specific locations (called “acupoints”) on the body. This activates the body’s energy, which promotes healing and a sense of well-being.
Is acupuncture painful?
Acupuncture is not painful. You may experience different sensations such as a dull ache, heaviness, numbness or tingling. These are all normal sensations and are a positive sign that the body’s energy has been activated. You may feel a slight pricking sensation when the needle is first inserted, but this will quickly change into a dull ache.
Acupuncture needles are many times thinner than the hypodermic needles used in Western medicine (hypodermic needles are thicker due to the fact that they are hollow so that fluids are able to pass through them).
